Discovery Holdings Ltd
CEOI MEMBER SINCE 2020
Adrian Gore founded Discovery in South Africa in 1992 with a core purpose “to make people healthier and enhance and protect their lives.” Discovery is now a multinational financial services group renowned for Vitality, the largest global platform that creates behavior change and financially integrates this behavior into insurance and financial services pricing. This pioneering model of insurance – called Vitality Shared-value Insurance – is transforming insurance markets globally, making a significant share of the insured population healthier and extending life expectancy. Discovery listed on the Johannesburg Stock Exchange in 1997 and has a market cap of R85 billion (US $4.6 billion) as of 27 February 2023. Certain global trends, such as the rise of lifestyle diseases and the ubiquity of technology, have made the Vitality Shared-value model even more relevant today than it was in 1992. Given these trends, Discovery has extended its model to wholly owned companies in other markets, such as Vitality U.K., and has transformed the global market by embedding its model into the world’s largest insurers. This spread has been achieved through an ecosystem of reward partners, technology assets, clinical capabilities, and actuarial data and structures to help partners integrate behavior change into their products and pricing. The Global Vitality Network includes leading insurers such as AIA, Generali, John Hancock, Manulife, Ping An Health, Sumitomo Life, IGI, BBVA, Prudential, Saludsa, and Equivida – representing more than 35% of the global personal protection market, touching more than 30 million lives across 40 markets.
